BULLYING

“‘Bullying’ presents a real-life male version of Snow White being violently attacked by 33 poisoned apples. It plays with the themes of identity, social oppression, gender discrimination, double standards, and childhood. The piece offers multiple interpretations. In order to capture the accuracy of movement, this work was created with the help of seventeen people throwing the apples into the frame simultaneously. “Fairy tales are very dangerous. I have a healthy disdain for the way fairy tales commercialize and comodify childhood and a disdain for icons in general. ‘Snow White’ is a tale rich in symbols and social messages. In a sense, the Disney imagery in ‘Bullying’ functions as a clin d’oeil to the indoctrination of children to what gender is. This is a choreographed image, where I perform a sequence of very fast and precise body movements. Then, I ask the photographer to catch that precise moment.” – Nuno Roque on ‘Bullying’.

This work integrates an Identity-themed series of performative self-portraits.

'I think the fact that I was severely bullied in my childhood helped me build strength and believe in my artistic vision. I learned early on what it feels like when someone takes a part of you, magnifies it and turns it into a reason to be violent.'
