THE PRINCE (LOOKING IN THE MIRROR)

“Sometimes it’s so hard to look at oneself, that most people prefer to look at themselves through the eyes of others.
Controlling one’s image is a recurring theme in my work. Mirrors are a daily object linked to a sense of identity. If we could not see ourselves, we wouldn’t be the same people, make the same decisions, live the same lives. When primates look into a mirror for the first time, they attack the image, and I believe we do the same. As civilized animals, we do it internally, but the ferocious attack remains. The reflection in the mirror allows a personality division, the sense of other: the one who looks in the mirror, and the one who looks back.

This artwork depicts a mix of addiction to your own image, and at the same time, in The Prince’s gaze, we see the fear of the image, that might have changed since the last time he looked in the mirror. In memento mori tradition, the frame displays angels with skulls sculpted in wood as if every time you look in the mirror, you are reminded of your mortality. The mirror has always been connected to death, as it is an object where one must face the constant passage of time.” – Nuno Roque on ‘The Prince (Looking In The Mirror)’
